For hundreds of thousands of years, our hunter-gatherer ancestors made do with makeshift shelters adapted to their itinerant lifestyle. With the arrival of the first farmers 7,000 years ago, a sedentary lifestyle led to the construction of "real" houses. The talk will focus on what archaeology has to say about the different architectural styles of our rural past. Not only how the ancients built their houses, but also what these structures reveal about their societies, cultures and lifestyles. The study of architectural forms that have disappeared also provides a better understanding of our existing built heritage.
