Following in the footsteps of the Swiss Cluniac abbeys in the Abbey Cellar
Ever since it was founded in the 10th century, the abbey of Cluny has grown in renown and served as a model for many other monasteries throughout Europe! Thanks to this network of Cluniac sites, Cluny left its mark on the Western world for almost nine centuries, not only spiritually, but also politically, socially, economically and culturally.
But did you know that nine medieval monasteries in what is now Switzerland were also directly dependent on Cluny, and that several of them are still preserved sites today, inviting you to take a stroll in the heart of nature or a city?
And how did all these Cluniac monks manage to stay connected to each other, without the solutions offered by our modern social communication, transport and information networks?
To coincide with Cluny and the Cluniac sites' application to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this exhibition of panels gives you the keys to understanding the history of Cluny Abbey and how this network worked, from its origins to its tragic end.
