Tiago Rodrigues wrote his play based on the trial of Flaubert for "immoralism, apology of adultery, offence to morals and religion" concerning his novel Madame Bovary, mœurs de province.
He summons Flaubert, who is not allowed to intervene but testifies and judges his trial in his correspondence with Elisa Schlesinger. The characters are summoned to the courtroom and re-enact scenes from the novel.
The boundaries between the trial, the work and its theatrical reconstruction are blurred, a relentless mechanism, described by Flaubert, which leads Emma Bovary to disaster. She who never stops dreaming of her life, a life she has read about in books...
