Town of artistic & historical interest

North of Auxerre, this 'waterside' town is the ideal departure point for a trip along the Canal de Bourgogne. You are sure to relish its past, its historic buildings and its excellent restaurants.

Centuries of history

Joigny was founded in Roman times and expanded in the 10th century when a fortress was built (castle, chapel, surrounding wall).

A terrible fire destroyed the town during the Renaissance. Rebuilding work saw the introduction of typical half-timbered houses that we can still see today.

Traditional districts

Part of Joigny's heritage is to be found at the heart of three extraordinary districts.

The 'quartier Saint-Jean' was built around the old surrounding wall of the castle. Its streets are lined with bourgeois or half-timbered houses.

The 'quartier Saint-Thibault', to the west, is home to craftsmen, shopkeepers and wine merchants.

The 'quartier Saint-André' is a typical wine-growing district of traditional houses and narrow, uneven cobbled streets.

Fancy something different? Every summer you can follow the actors in the 'visite-spectacle des Nuits Maillotines', featuring exceptional buildings and famous people from the town's history....

A gourmet's paradise

Joigny boasts about thirty hectares of vineyards, planted with Pinot gris, Pinot noir and Chardonnay grape varieties. If you enjoy fine food, the Michelin starred La Côte Saint Jacques restaurant serves sophisticated, innovative cuisine. You can even have a cookery lesson with the Chef, before enjoying the Spa facilities and indoor swimming pool.
