The Hospices de Beaune

A place of legend

An emblematic example of 15th century Flamboyant Gothic architecture, the Hospices - or Hôtel-Dieu – bring together all the spiritual, artistic and wine-making traditions of Burgundy. This legendary place, at the heart of the Côtes de Beaune, is full of promise.

An age-old hospital tradition

Since it was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rollin, the Hôtel-Dieu has born witness to the Flemish influence of the Duchy of Burgundy.

You may well be surprised by its vivid interior courtyard, its half-timbered gallery, turrets and multi-coloured roof tiles.

Right up to 1970, the Sœurs Hospitalières (nuns) took care of orphaned children, the sick and the destitute in this harmonious setting.

Hospices wine auction

The Hospices de Beaune owns a vineyard of almost 60 hectares in Côte de Beaune, Côtes de Nuits and Pouilly-Fuissé. The produce from these vines is sold in an auction on the 3rd Sunday of November to connoisseurs and professionals from all over the world. This public event is the opportunity to taste and to find out about Burgundy wines....

The Hospices also cater for music lovers! In July the International Baroque Opera Festival is staged in the great courtyard, keeping alive the musical tradition of the court of the Dukes of Burgundy.

A priceless setting and collection

Festivals and architecture apart, the Hospices also houses a museum with unsuspected treasures.

The superb "Polyptych of the Last Judgement", by the Flemish painter Rogier Van Der Weyden, must be the high point of the tour.

Walk around the "salle des pôvres", with its two rows of curtained box beds, the kitchens, dispensary and infirmary ... the sequence of rooms showing how the charitable organisation was run.

The great hall is where Gérard Oury filmed the legendary scene from his film “La Grande Vadrouille”..

Be sure to see other places in Beaune, former capital of Burgundy: the church of Notre-Dame, the ramparts, wine cellars and terraces.
