Reflecting forests and hills

Just 2 hours from Paris, the Morvan massif is at the very heart of your holiday. The large lakes in the north of this National Park are perfect for hiking around or for water sports on still water. Want to go somewhere different? The Morvan lakes offer a complete change of scenery!

By the hand of man

Large lakes were created in the Morvan from the 19th century by damming the waters of a number of tributaries of the Yonne and the Cure rivers.

Settons lake was created in 1861 to increase water flow for transporting wood. It is now one of the major stages in the Grande Traversée du Morvan (GTM) mountain bike route, linking Avallon to Autun.

After the floods of 1910, Pannecière lake and Chaumeçon reservoir were used to regulate water flow in the Yonne and the Seine rivers.

Saint Agnan lake is the most recent man-made lake. It provides drinking water for about thirty villages.

Areas to explore

There are long and short distance footpaths and many bridle paths. Fishing, swimming and mountain biking will help you discover a wide range of landscapes. Set amidst forests, meadows bordered by hedges and steep slopes, Pannecière lake is well stocked with fish. Sunset over Saint-Agnan has a distinctly Irish feel.

The Maison du Parc de Saint Brisson enjoys an unspoilt natural setting. Try out the discovery trails before touring the Man and Landscape visitor centre, Morvan open air museum or WWII Resistance museum.

Family adventure by the lake

At Settons lake there are water-based activities for every level of expertise. Why not take a canoe trip to the large island, home to many bird species, and set foot on a new continent? Pedalos, horses and mountain bikes are other ways for families to explore these wide open spaces. It's like a little bit of Canada or Scandinavia ... just 2 hours from Paris.
