The Château de Bazoches is set in lush green grounds at the heart of the Morvan countryside. Come and see evidence of Marshal Vauban's life here: his study, the cards' room, his bedroom and his superb view of Vézelay... it's almost as if this extraordinary person never left.

Vauban's residence, among other things
A brief history
The famous military engineer acquired this ancient medieval 12th-century fortress by way of a gratuity from Louis XIV after the town of Maastricht was captured. He renovated the residence to suit his tastes and his needs.
The layout and tour
What significant innovation did Vauban bring to this château? He built a great gallery overlooking the valley and it was here that the engineers working for him were based. It was in fact here in Bazoches that the plans for 300 fortifications were drawn up by Vauban for the Sun King.
His study, his bedroom, his armour, his family tree, his scale models... you can see all of this and more during the tour, to really get to know this famous architect.

A classified place of remembrance
Serving both as a place of work and residence, the Château de Bazoches is brimming with remarkable memories of Vauban's life. As such, it is one of the 14 places in Burgundy to bear the French "Maison des Illustres" label.
The purpose of the places that have been awarded this label is to preserve and share the memory of people distinguished in the political, scientific, social and cultural history of France.

In the footsteps of Marshal Vauban
If there's one person who really left his mark on French territory, it's definitely Vauban! This engineer, military architect and urban planner built 30 fortresses and either overhauled or fortified 270 sites all over France.
