Monastic wine-growing and Grands Crus

Wine-growing began here in Gallo-Roman times and benefited enormously from land clearing work carried out by the monks. Cistercian monks introduced several grape varieties to Burgundy.

In the 14th century monks completed work on the Clos de Vougeot. They improved cultivation and vinification techniques ... to such an extent that Clos de Vougeot became the wine of choice for Popes!

Le Château du Clos de VougeotPartly destroyed during the French Revolution, the vineyards also suffered from oïdium, mildew and Phylloxera in the late 19th century. They were replanted in rows and only the best parcels or 'climats' were retained – today they are candidates for UNESCO World Heritage status.
