The work of a great architect

The medieval foundation of Cormatin shows clear evidence of a strong house controlling one of the roads to Cluny.

In the early 17th century, the stronghold was demolished by Antoine du Blé. The château which replaced it is in French “rustic style”. With virtually no ornamentation to its façade, Cormatin differs considerably from the “antique precepts” of the late Renaissance.

Drawing rooms and gardens

To tour Cormatin is to experience 17th century French taste in its purest form.

  • Château de CormatinThe great staircase, 20 metres high and 9 metres wide, is based on the one which graced the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris.
  • The cabinet of curios or “hall of mirrors” has a 'sky painted' ceiling, made fashionable by Marie de Medici.
  • The gilt and lapis-lazuli work in Jacques du Blé's study are enhanced by candlelight.

Take time to admire the newly replanted gardens ... and don't miss the kitchen garden! The outdoor theatre is the setting for delightful plays and musical tales throughout the summer. The “Rendez-vous de Cormatin" feature over 40 different performances of classical authors.

A tribute to Louis XIII

The apartments of the marchioness have elegant wood panelling and very fine French style beamed ceilings. Above the fireplace in the antechamber Louis XIII is depicted astride a horse.

Why not try the 'voie verte', with its 120 kilometres of secure cycle track? From Cormatin you can go as far as Cluny then explore the Val Lamartinien and the Solutré rock...
