The road to or from your holiday destination can seem very long. Whatever the season, stop off in Burgundy for the night or just a few hours. How's that for a good idea? Along the motorways there are a host of treasures to discover and places to stay, offering traditional settings and excellent food: 'classic' hotels, guesthouses (B&B), furnished townhouses...Just take your pick!
On the A5, stop off at Sens, a town of artistic and historical interest. Stretch your legs on the banks of the Yonne and visit the moulin à Tan, a vast green space with exotic plants in tropical greenhouses. Total change of scenery guaranteed!
Travelling on the A6? Stop at Joigny. Rather than just having a sandwich, why not enjoy a gourmet meal in the Michelin 3 star Côte Saint Jacques restaurant? [Lien vers base de données] You could even stay overnight in a luxury room in the adjoining hotel. After this, don't miss Auxerre where you can relax for an hour or two on its pedestrianized street, as far as the Tour de l'Horloge.
Follow the D965 road to Chablis, then Tonnerre. Take a 'history break' to explore the rich and varied heritage of this area close to the Auxerrois. Why not spend the night in a rural gîte in the Tonnerois?
If you've been driving for a few hours on the A6, take a break in Dijon. Treat yourself to some typical local produce, such as flavoured mustard or delicious gingerbread! Rest and relax in a furnished townhouse close to the city centre.
Prefer to drive a little longer before stopping? Then stop off further south in Beaune or the surrounding area. Why not leave the motorway and travel along the N74 as far as the Côte de Nuits vineyards or stop off somewhere on the Route des Grands Crus? If you do then don't miss the chance for an impromptu wine tasting ... before getting back behind the wheel, you could spend the night in one of the local wine estate guesthouses.

On the A77, take a break in the Nivernais at La Charité-sur-Loire. In the centre of this Book town, stretch your legs along the Promenade des Anglais and admire the Vieux pont. Did you know that it's the oldest bridge of its kind anywhere on the Loire?
If you intend to spend the night in the area, why not book a hotel room in Nevers? This town of artistic and historical interest boasts many treasures - medieval, modern ... and sweet! Treat yourself to some local specialities, such as Négus sweets. A paradise for the sweet toothed!
If you're on the A6 motorway heading to the sun (or the skiing), why not stop by a river? Chalon-sur-Saône boasts some superb religious heritage and you can even go for an unplanned cruise along the Saône.
Before leaving Burgundy don't forget to call in at Mâcon. Sample the local Chevreton de Mâcon. Also called 'Mâconnais', this traditionally made goat's cheese has a slightly salty taste developing into a host of different flavours in the mouth...
