Walk around the hillside vineyards and picturesque villages near Auxerre. There are many wine-growing villages like Coulanges-la-Vineuse or Irancy with its cherry orchards. After stopping to taste wine in a cellar or two, why not stay the night in a guesthouse set amidst the vineyards?
To the east is Tonnerre. You could stay on a wine-growing estate and take the opportunity to admire the mysterious Fosse Dionne...
Food lovers will head for one of the Michelin starred restaurants in the area: La Côte Saint-Jacques at Joigny (3 stars), L'Espérance at St-Père-sous-Vézelay (2 stars) or La Madeleine at Sens (2 stars)!
The N6 road leads to the Côte de Nuits wine-growing area, covering 14 wine-growing villages along the Route des Grands Crus. This area is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. .
Prefer travelling on minor roads? Along the N74 road, near the Clos de Vougeot, is the château de Gilly. Once the property of Cistercian monks, this hotel offers wine tasting sessions in its cellars.
Want to try something different? Fly over the vineyards in a helicopter or on a microlight! Carry on as far as Puligny-Montrachet and enjoy a stay in the peace and comfort of Olivier Leflaive's guesthouse and table d'hôtes. While there, why not take part in an entertaining workshop to see what it's like to be a wine-grower or cellarman? Under an hour away by car is the famous Michelin 3 star Relais de Bernard Loiseau at Saulieu.
Afterwards go down the 'voie des vignes' cycle track from Beaune to Santenay, passing through villages with famous names, such as Pommard or Meursault. Why not spend a weekend or a week in the area, stopping overnight in one of the nearby Logis Bacchus? Savour the great wines on offer and become a bit of an wine expert yourself!
