Start with something unexpected

GuédelonAt the heart of the Puisaye a group of 50 workmen have taken up the unique challenge of building Guédelon castle using only medieval materials and techniques! The only one of its kind in the world, the building site takes you right back to the 13th century: no mechanical noise, just the sounds of stone being cut, wood sawn and horses' hooves. Along the Canal de Bourgogne, the château d'Ancy-le-Franc is a fine example of elegant Renaissance architecture. This listed historical building is the setting for remarkable classical concerts in the guardroom or main courtyard.

Move on to the majestic

Châteauneuf-en-AuxoisNot far away, in Dijon, don't miss the impressive Palace of the Dukes and States of Burgundy. It began as a simple fortress but was rebuilt a number of times, from the 14th-18th centuries. Today it houses the Town Hall and Fine Art museum.

At Châteauneuf-en-Auxois the medieval castle stands tall on its rocky spur. You can visit the keep, 'Grand logis', chapel and south tower, with its military installations, overhanging the valley.

"Set off on a timeless journey, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance."

Continue on the water

On the Canal du Nivernais some extraordinary and very well preserved engineering structures can still be appreciated today. Enjoy a relaxed, traditional cruise from the vaulted canal tunnels of La Collancelle, via the series of 16 locks at Sardy as far as the lakes at Baye and Vaux.

End up at the châteaux

In southern Burgundy, the Châteaux Tourist Route is a perfect flight of fancy. This extraordinary route will take you to the medieval fortress of La Rochepot, the château of Cormatin, the Middle Age castles of Brancion, Sully and Pierreclos. Set off on a timeless journey, from the Middles Ages to the Renaissance.
