Medieval Fair and ‘Fêtes de la Bague’

10th, 11th and 31st May in Semur-en-Auxois
These celebrations have a long history, having begun in 1566 and 1639 respectively, and continue today due to the enthusiasm of the people of Semur-en-Auxois. They have always taken place at Whitsuntide (Pentecost) in time for the return of the fine weather and were a magnet for the great fairs of the day.
Today they represent a fun way of recreating the past – medieval market, fancy dress parade, good food, concerts, special events and games in which everyone can take part, in addition to the famous, traditional horse race.

‘Fleurs de Vigne’, the Yonne wine festival

18th May in Auxerre
Since 2005, on the 3rd Sunday in May, the Fleurs de Vigne association has organised this unique festive and cultural event featuring all the vineyards in the Yonne department. It takes place on the left bank of the river Yonne in Auxerre.
Its aim: to give visitors the chance to sample all the Yonne wines in a single location, in return for buying a single ‘passport glass’ for 5 €uros (on sale before the event in the Tourist Information Office and on the day). Between tastings, visitors can sample other local produce or just stroll along the river banks and enjoy the special events (concerts, exhibitions, parade on the river, etc.).

‘Les Montgolfiades’ (Hot Air ballooning)

Whitsun weekend in Chalon-sur-Saône
One of the official European Hot Air Balloon competitions, the ‘Montgolfiades de Chalon’ have now become a yearly event marking the start of summer festivities …
They promise a weekend of magic and enchantment … as much for those who stay on the ground and admire these large “soap bubbles” floating through the air --- as for those who take off in one and see the lovely , cattle dotted landscape below getting smaller and smaller…
From first-timers to hardened balloonists, there will be fifty or so teams meeting and competing at the event … and to top it all, the balloonists are welcomed and offered accommodation in the homes of local winegrowers. Wine has always been synonymous with hospitality, sharing and good cheer …
