Fêtes du Sapin in Saulieu

An event that you will pine for!

02/12/2017 - 02/12/2017

The fêtes du sapin [fir festivals] takes place every year in the centre of Saulieu. This is an opportunity to celebrate the traditional Christmas tree, as well as to prepare for December and the end of the year among family and friends. Activities and wonderful regional products make this an unmissable event in Burgundy.

Celebrate in the capital of the Christmas tree

Every year in early December, Saulieu hosts the fêtes du sapin [fir festivals], warmly heralding the start of winter. This is also an opportunity to showcase the wealth of Morvan’s natural and cultural heritage, Europe’s premier area for Christmas tree cultivation.

Every year, the festivals are based on a common theme that is central to the region. In 2011, they celebrated the Morvan Compedium of Beasts. They finish on the Sunday with a huge Christmas tree sale at the foot of Saint-Andoche Basilica.

The spirit of Christmas is in the air at Saulieu

For a whole weekend, the town throbs to the end-of-year celebrations. Families and friends meet up in the centre of Saulieu to enjoy the free activities and shows: Storytelling, theatre shows, carriage rides, pony rides, concerts… And the basilica square features a giant fir tree decorated and illuminated by an artist.

The tree is surrounded by stands featuring regional produce to sample and to purchase. Adults are welcome to warm up with the hot wine and Burgundy herbal tea that’s available, whilst children can turn to the specially dedicated children’s workshops.
