Fête du Flottage in Clamecy

A naval battle on the Yonne

Every year during the 3rd weekend of July, Clamecy pays tribute to a local ancestral tradition; the wood floaters. The fête du flottage [floating festival] brings together the old and the young during two days of activities on the shores of the Yonne.

150 years of tradition

The sunny days of July herald the return of the floating festival at Clamecy. This tradition is a tribute to a 16th Century trade. For 400 years, the wood floaters transported wood used for heating and cooking from Burgundy to Paris on timber rafts that are like giant wood floats.

The fête du flottage [floating festiva] traces the story of this expertise. On the Saturday, associations and voluntary organisations build giant rafts. The rafts are placed in the water on the Sunday just long enough for a water jousting session in which a ‘Roi Sec’ [‘Dry King’] is named the winner - the only person not to have fallen into the Yonne.

Activities for all the family

The fête du flottage [floating festival] is also an opportunity to explore and be a part of Burgundy’s cultural, natural and gastronomic heritage. Young and old alike will love the huge number of activities available during the two day period at the port of Clamecy:

  • stands,

  • conferences,

  • costumed parades,

  • kayaking and rowing,

  • flavours and wines market,

  • enjoyable meals with music,

  • pony rides,

  • inflatables…

The weekend is rounded off with a parade of the timber rafts travelling down the Yonne as the ultimate tribute.
