Hiking paths around Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle

Discover Burgundy in the footsteps of the pilgrims

From the Yonne to Nièvre, the Vézelay path leads walkers towards exceptional cultural heritage sites. Whether on a spiritual quest, seeking beautiful sights or simply searching for peace and relaxation, you will certainly appreciate this exceptional itinerary.

Villages, forest trails and prestigious sites

From the 11th Century onwards, Vézelay became the starting point of one of the historic roads leading to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Here you can visit the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Basilica, a jewel in the crown of Roman art, and the Saint-Jacques d’Asquins church, home to a magnificent figurine of the Saint in polychrome wood. These two buildings are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

From there the pilgrimage route is divided into two sections. Following the itinerary to the north you will discover Varzy and its Auguste Grasset museum, presenting objects and works of art from the 19th Century brought together by a passionate collector. You will then arrive at La Charité-sur-Loire, where the Sainte-Croix-Notre-Dame Church is also listed by UNESCO.

The southern road will take you towards Corbigny Abbey, before then heading onwards to Prémery, Guérigny and the forests rich in fauna. At Nevers you can admire the famous Ducal Palace and several churches from the 19th to 20th Centuries. You can then make a stopover at the Bernadette Soubirous-Nevers area, which retraces the life of Saint Bernadette. This route will finally lead you to Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier, its presbytery and the mill of the Éventées, which houses four large fabric paddles.

Organise your itinerary and accommodation

On the Saint-Jacques road, several accommodation options are available:

  • refuges for pilgrims (at Varzy, Arbourse-l’Hôpitot, Corbigny and Saint-Révérien) ;

  • other, more « traditional », accommodation (hotels, campsites, gîtes, guest houses).

Whatever the length of your adventure, remember to pack suitable clothing and footwear for walking. If heading off for several days, be sure to pack a sleeping bag and washbag which are easy to carry. You can then make the most of your walking trip!
