In the footsteps of famous Burgundians

Vauban, Nicéphore Niepce, Colette… Countless personalities who have shaped our political, social and cultural history were born or chose to take up home in Burgundy. The region is lucky enough to boast 12 « Maisons des Illustres ». This label was founded by the Culture Ministry in order to single out the homes and work places of men and women that have left their mark on history. A rich heritage that you can take the time to explore, allowing you to enter into the private lives of these great spirits in order to better understand their achievements.

The château de Bazoches: the souvenir of an avant-garde spirit.

Engineer, town planner, essayist...Vauban left his mark on the France of Louis XIV by constructing nearly 300 fortified squares and military buildings. It was at his study in the château de Bazoches that some of his works were conceived. Most notably, you can discover the prototype that convinced Louis XIV of the strategic usefulness of the famous « plans reliefs », three dimensional geographic representations employed by the prominent states of the period. This is a visit that history lovers should not miss.

The home of Nicéphore Niepce: the origins of photography

Nicéphore Niepce took the world’s very first picture from the window of his house in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes. Relive the inspiring story of this major discovery at this « museum-home ». You can, most notably, admire a reconstruction of the inventor’s original camera.

The château de Germolles :

Acquired in 1380 by Philip the Bold, this fortified house was transformed by his wife Marguerite of Flanders into a luxurious home. Embellished by the greatest artists of the Burgundian School (Claus Sluter, Jean de Beaumetz…), this is now the only pleasure palace of the Dukes of Burgundy that remains in existence. A great many conferences and workshops are held here during the summer season for adults and for children. It is the opportunity to discover every facet of the Middle Ages.

Colette’s birth house: a decor of novels

The house where Colette grew up, until he was 17, was referred to countless times in his works. Marble fireplace, period wainscotting… this decor remains intact. This is a chance to see the words of the novelist taking shape and to step into the private life of a lady of letters who defined her generation (opening planned for September 2015).
