Cité de la Nature et de l’Industrie

The human and industrial memory of Creusot-Montceau

The area of Creusot-Montceau, in southern Burgundy, enjoyed major industrial development during the 19th century. Forges, mines and factories were established here and have shaped the landscape. Nowadays, a reminder of this great activity is preserved and presented thanks to a number of sites-museums. Natural spaces that were once devoted to industry have now become havens for the pleasures of the great outdoors.

An economic history that is richly preserved

Discover the Château de la Verrerie in Le Creusot ! This former glass manufacturing site of Queen Marie-Antoinette, which was also the residence of the Schneider dynasty of industrialists, now houses the Musée de l’Homme et de l’Industrie. At the Pavillon de l’Industrie interpretation centre you will learn all about the industrial past of Le Creusot, but also about present day and future evolutions in the field of metallurgy (from September 2015). A curious architectural feature is that within one of the former glassware kilns, the Schneiders built a magnificent little Italian theatre in order to receive clients and heads of state. This unusual site is now open for visits and also hosts cultural events.

In Blanzy, visit the Musée de la Mine (the former Saint-Claude mines). The lamp room, the machine room, the mine galleries, the hanging room… all bear witness to the mining savoir-faire of the time.

A little further south, the Ciry-le-Noble Brickyard reflects the history of the « Ceramic Valley ». In the 19th and 20th centuries, around forty factories were in operation all along the Canal du Centre.

In Ecuisses, the Villa Perrusson, built for the directors of the neighbouring tile factory, is a real-life testament to this past! During your visit, discover enamelled bricks, ceramic square tiles, art nouveau style chimneys, a surrounding wall made of recovered or misfired tiles. The landscaped park of the home is in the process of being renovated. It will open to the public in 2016. You will then be able to admire the orangery, the greenhouses and a pond in the style of an English garden.

Everyone goes green!

The Parc Touristique des Combes in Le Creusot stretches across more than 70 hectares. With family or friends, you can enjoy a wide range of open air activities from March to November. You can choose between: nautical attractions, hot-air balloons, little trains, as well as walking and mountain biking trails… There is something to suit all tastes.

You can also discover life along the Canal du Centre: in Ecuisses, visit a lock house and discover how the water boatmen live, transport and haulage along the towpaths aboard the barge « Armançon ». Do you feel like relaxing along the waterways? Take advantage of a cruise on board the sightseeing boat « Les 7 écluses ».

The Cité de la Nature et de l’Industrie is made up of 6 unmissable sites, spread out across 5 communes within the Creusot Montceau urban community.
