Exploring the Climats of Burgundy

From Dijon to Santenay, the Burgundy wine-growing area is a land of promise for all wine lovers. 65 km of well-balanced 'terroirs' and age-old expertise have produced 32 Grands Crus of world renown. Because every village, every plot, every Climat (classified by UNESCO) is unique, the great wines of the vine-growing hillsides provide endless discoveries...

Monastic wine-growing and Grands Crus

Wine-growing began here in Gallo-Roman times and benefited enormously from land clearing work carried out by the monks. Cistercian monks introduced several grape varieties to Burgundy.

In the 14th century, monks completed work on the Clos de Vougeot. They improved cultivation and vinification techniques to such an extent that Clos de Vougeot became the wine of choice for Popes!

Partly destroyed during the French Revolution, the vineyards also suffered from oïdium, mildew and Phylloxera in the late 19th century. This reconstruction site is based on plantation in rows and the conservation of the very best plots - or "climats" – classified since 2015 as UNESCO World Heritage sites

Take the high road...

Impressed by the sheer number of vineyards and the wealth of appellations? Just drive along the old route nationale N74 by car, camper van or motorbike or cycle along the Voie des Vignes, from Beaune to Santenay, to explore the lands which so captivated Charlemagne, Henri IV and Napoleon:

The abundant Côte de Nuits produces excellent Marsannay, Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée.

The Côte de Beaune produces wines with exquisite bouquets, known and appreciated all over the world: Corton, Pommard, Volnay, Saint-Romain, Auxey-Duresses, Meursault, Montrachet, Santenay...

Fancy some first class food with your Burgundy wine? Book a table at La Maison Lameloise in Chagny! In Beaune the Michelin starred Loiseau des vignes restaurant has a superb selection of wines by the glass, starting at 3 €uros. If you prefer a "Relais & châteaux" establishment, spend the night at L'hostellerie de Levernois before setting off to explore the Great Wine Côte.

Trust the label

Good places to eat, accommodation, vineyard tours... the "Vignobles et Découvertes" quality label was created in 2010 to help you find the best wine tourism destinations. "Colline de Corton", "Colline de Montrachet" and "Dijon Côte de Nuits" have already been awarded this label.
